The CrossFit Games announced that “all divisions will swim on Saturday at the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games,” in an Instagram post yesterday. The event will take place at the University of Wisconsin’s Nicholas Recreation Center.

One big thing: This is the first time that all divisions will compete in a pool event at the Games. In fact, only the individual division has ever competed in the pool.

  • CrossFit gave a small hint into the genetic makeup of the event, writing: “Two key components of the CrossFit methodology are taking on workouts with varied stimuli and learning to play new sports. This year, you’ll get to see the best athletes in our sport demonstrate their skill in these two areas.”

Remind me: The first pool event in Games history took place during the 2013 Games and it was for individual athletes only. That year the event was held first thing on Wednesday morning to kick off the competition.

  • The event was called “The Pool” and included 10 rounds for time of a 25-yard swim, 3 bar muscle-ups, and a 25-yard swim with a time cap of 25 minutes. Jordan Troyan won the event for the men, while Michelle Letendre took it for the women.

After several years of open water swim events, both in the Pacific Ocean and in Lake Monona, 2020 saw a return to the pool, as the CrossFit Games team adapted to hold a conclusion to a season decimated by the global pandemic.

  • The 2020 pool event was called “Swim ‘N’ Stuff,” and was contested by only 5 men and 5 women. As programmed the event was an interval-style workout with 4 rounds, each for time of 15/10 Echo Bike Calories, a 50m swim, 10 GHD sit-ups, and 10 ball slams at 60/40 pounds. A new round started every 4 minutes and once an athlete finished the round they rested until the new 4-minute clock started.
  • Samuel Kwant won on the men’s side, edging out Mat Fraser who ultimately won 10 of the 12 events. On the women’s side Tia-Clair Toomey won on her way to taking 9 of the 12 events.

The bottom line: It will be exciting to see another pool event at the Games, and with all divisions taking to the water, this year’s iteration will no doubt be a high point of the week.
