DURHAM – Preseason is off and running for the No. 2 ranked Duke women’s soccer program, as the squad held their first team practice of the 2022 season on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s session officially kicked off the 35th season in program history as the team went through the first full training session of the new campaign on the 751 fields in the evening after morning testing.

“You know, day one is always an interesting day,” said Duke head coach Robbie Church.  “You have testing early in the morning and our testing was ok.  I thought we really responded in the afternoon session.  We were aggressive and attacked practice.  I thought all phases of the game – offensively and defensively – we did really well, and the energy was contagious.  We lose a ball and a lot of people in packs were pressing.  I loved everything we had.  The thing that really surprised me on the first day was how good our combination play was.”

It was also day one for the Blue Devils’ five freshmen: Caroline Duffy, Kat Rader, Devin Lynch, Elle Piper and Taylor Evans. Duke returns to the pitch Wednesday morning for its second practice session of the preseason.  The Blue Devils are missing two student-athletes from practice as sophomore Michelle Cooper and freshman Carina Lageyre are representing the United States at the U-20 World Cup in Costa Rica.

Duke returns eight starters from a season ago, including 18 letterwinners off a 2021 squad that registered 16 victories, made a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 5 nationally.

The Blue Devils will feature six days of practice before traveling to Athens, Ga., for an exhibition contest on Monday, Aug. 8 against Georgia.
