PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Marquette men’s soccer team (4-6-2, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) earned a point on the road Saturday afternoon, playing to a 3-3 draw with Providence at Anderson Stadium.

“This was the second-straight game we started with five freshmen in the lineup and a couple of players having to play out of position because of injuries, and it’s the second game that we’ve played extremely well in parts of the game,” said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. “We really battled, and I’m really proud of our guys. This has never been an easy place to play, and we managed to get a point. I’m hugely proud of the fight, and we got a lot of groundwork down here.”

A wild match which included five second-half goals began as a defensive battle. The Golden Eagles struck first with just over a minute remaining in the first half, a Friars defender was called for a hand ball while attempting to block a shot in the 43rd minute. Senior striker Lukas Sunesson stepped up for the resulting penalty kick, punching it in for his fourth PK goal of the season to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 at the break.

In the 60th minute, a shot which was played into the box by PC took an unfortunate bounce off of a Marquette defender and crossed into the goal to even the match at 1-1. The even score didn’t last long though, as just two minutes later junior attacker Beto Soto responded with a left-footed strike to put the Golden Eagles back in the lead.

The Friars evened things up once again in the 75th minute with a header from the corner, then pulled ahead with another goal in the 83rd. Despite its first deficit of the contest, Marquette didn’t go away quietly. In the 89th minute, sophomore midfielder Edrey Caceres caught the PC goalie away from his post as he dialed in a left-footed arching strike from near midfield.

The match finished with nearly even statistics across the board for both teams. MU finished with 15 shots, 10 of which were on goal, while Providence had 16 shots, eight on goal.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will return to home next week to face Seton Hall at Valley Fields on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. (CT).
