PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men’s water polo split its two games on Saturday, falling to Harvard and beating MIT.
 
Brown moves to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in NWPC play after the two games on Saturday.
 
“While it’s nice to get the split today, we definitely have some work to do,” said head coach Felix Mercado. “The guys did a good job of coming back for the second game and doing enough for the win. Recover and regroup for more home games next week.”
 
HARVARD 15, BROWN 10
The Bears fell behind early to Harvard and were not able to make a comeback, falling to the Crimson 15-10 to start the day.
 
Ilias Stothart led the Bears with three goals and Gabe Chang had two. Five other Bears tallied a goal in the game.
 
Stothart got the scoring going early in the first but Harvard took control with six-straight goals before Matt Simko scored with three seconds on the clock to end the first quarter.
 
Chang and Cole Atwell each scored in the second quarter but three goals by Harvard made it a 9-3 game at the half.
 
Stothart picked up his second goal of the game and Thomas Hoffmeister scored in the third quarter for Brown. Harvard extended its lead during the quarter with four goals.
 
The Bears won the fourth quarter 4-2 with Chang, Stothart, Daniel Kristich and Daniel Hadar all scoring.
 
BROWN 16, MIT 9
Brown bounced back in the night cap with a 16-9 win over MIT. Ben Kirshon led the Bears with three goals. Leo Berkman, Cole Atwell, Matt Simko, Gabe Chang and Ilias Stothart all scored two goals in the win.
 
The Bears jumped ahead early with goals from Atwell, Stothart, Simko and Filip Aleksic within the first four minutes of the game. Kirshon’s goal with 2:19 on the clock put Brown up 5-0 before MIT scored twice at the end of the quarter.
 
Kirshon put Brown up four before two goals from MIT. Stothart and Chang matched two late goals by MIT as Brown took an 8-6 lead into halftime.
 
Berkman scored back-to-back goals for Brown to double the lead for the Bears. Two mintues later, Kirshon scored as Brown won the third period 3-1.
 
The Bears took control of the game early in the fourth as Hoffmeister, Atwell and Chang all scored to make the score 14-7. Simko and Khristich each scored once more to close out the game.
 
Simeon Dong picked up the win in goal for the Bears with 11 saves.
 
UP NEXT
Brown will be back home hosting four games next weekend as part of the Harvard Invitational. The Bears will play Gannon and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday (Oct. 15) and Long Beach State and Salem on Sunday (Oct. 16).
