Siberia’s Magnetic Mystique: The North Pole’s Surprising Shift Unveiled!

The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has unveiled the World magnetic model 2025 (WMM2025), highlighting that the Earth’s magnetic field is progressively migrating towards Siberia.
The World magnetic model provides the most recent, precise forecasts of shifts in Earth’s magnetic field. The 2025 variant will remain valid until 2029.
In addition to monitoring the alterations in the Earth’s magnetic field, the model also delivers crucial updates for technologies dependent on the Earth’s magnetic field, such as GPS, navigation systems, and compasses.
A significant improvement in WMM 2025 is the World magnetic model high resolution (WMMHR 2025), which greatly enhances spatial accuracy, decreasing the equatorial resolution from 3,300 kilometres down to about 300 kilometres. This progress guarantees more accurate navigation for both military and civilian purposes, including vessels, submarines, and planes, as well as consumer gadgets like smartphones and GPS devices.
The updated model also modifies the blackout zones around the poles, where the magnetic field becomes unreliable for navigation. These areas have shifted slightly, indicating transformations in the Earth’s magnetic field.
The migration of the magnetic north pole is influenced by molten metals located in the Earth’s outer core. In the last two hundred years, the magnetic north pole has shifted roughly 2,250 kilometres from Canada towards Russia. Between 1990 and 2005, its pace of movement accelerated to 50–60 kilometres annually. However, in recent times, this speed has lessened to 35 kilometres per year.
The WMM receives updates every five years and is utilized worldwide by government entities, military organizations, and institutions including NATO.
