A recent report by Deloitte released in November indicated that in the forthcoming months, “top smartphone manufacturers may view generative AI integration as a method to boost demand for their high-end models”.

The report further detailed that over the last two years, smartphone sales have declined, partly due to market saturation. It stated, “An estimated five billion individuals now possess smartphones — more than half of the global population. By 2025, smartphones are anticipated to challenge the utility of generative or gen AI. The number of shipped gen AI-enabled smartphones might surpass 30% by the conclusion of 2025.”

The report indicated that this could result in a slight improvement in the yearly growth rate of worldwide smartphone shipments, rising from 5% in 2024 to 7% in 2025.

But it’s not solely about gen AI. Research studies also indicate that voice assistants powered by large language models (LLMs) will significantly enhance this year in the smartphone segment, complementing existing tools such as Apple’s Siri. Additionally, smartphone producers are harnessing AI in various forms to assist users in prolonging battery life and enhancing storage capacities, among other features.

Beyond AI, smartphone producers are also focused on launching more multi-display devices. In 2024, Huawei introduced the world’s first tri-display smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT equipped with a HiSilicon Kirin 9010 SoC processor. Moreover, in 2025, there’s anticipation around the launch of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, which is set to be introduced shortly in India.

Regarding gadgets, exciting updates and fresh models are being rolled out by smartphone manufacturers. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra series, anticipated to be available in January 2025, is predicted to be priced starting from Rs 1,20,000.

This series is likely to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and is expected to provide better battery performance and display quality. Additionally, it is also projected to include a 50MP telephoto lens and 256GB of storage, coupled with 16GB of RAM. Greater emphasis on AI processing capabilities is also expected for this series.

Furthermore, the iPhone SE 4, with a release anticipated in March 2025, is expected to be available at a more affordable price, from Rs 50,000, by Apple standards. This device is rumored to utilize an A18 Bionic chipset and a 48MP sensor, with enhancements in battery life. As for Apple, there’s also excitement for the iPhone 17 series, with expectations for its launch in September. With the iPhone 17, Apple may also focus more intensively on intelligence, iOS19, and “privacy-preserving AI.”

In addition, the Google Pixel 9a is expected to debut in March, with starting prices around Rs 50,000. This model is projected to feature a Tensor G4 chip, although some analysts suggest it might also include an Exynos 5300 modem. With a three-camera arrangement overall, the device is anticipated to enhance its AI-driven capabilities along with improved Google Assistant functionalities. Additionally, the Google offering is likely to come with standard 128GB storage and 8GB of RAM.
