Women’s Basketball Wraps Up the Year at Purdue Fort Wayne Showdown

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The women’s basketball squad from Western Michigan is set to compete against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday, December 21. The game is scheduled to commence at 2:00 PM and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The women’s basketball team at Western Michigan University triumphed over Prairie View A&M University on Tuesday with a score of 87-58. This victory marked the 175th head coaching win for WMU women’s basketball coach Shane Clipfell with the Brown and Gold. Clipfell is now merely four wins away from matching Fran Ebert’s (1967-82) record for the most wins in the program’s history.

During Tuesday’s game, four Broncos achieved double-digit scoring, including graduate student Hannah Spitzley and junior Marina Asensio, who together contributed 28 points. In this successful outing, Asensio matched her career-high by sinking four three-pointers and securing a personal best of seven rebounds, while Spitzley raised her career three-point total to 92 and continues to add to that tally. The graduate student enters the contest on Saturday in a tie with Leighah-Amori Wool (2017-2020) for the 18th spot in program history for most three-pointers made. Additionally, WMU’s other graduate student Megan Wagner delivered four assists, enhancing her career total to 235, ranking her 16th for most assists in the program’s history. 

Purdue Fort Wayne Overview

The Mastodons approach the game with a record of 7-5. Former Bronco Lauren Ross leads the Mastodons, averaging 18.5 points per game and boasting shooting percentages of 49.3% from the field, 51.2% from beyond the arc, and 91.8% from the charity stripe. Ross and her team are one of the two 3-0 squads in the Horizon League, having achieved victories over Robert Morris, Green Bay, and IU Indianapolis.
