TUCSON, ARIZ. – Arizona Swim & Dive achieved a clean sweep over the BYU Cougars during the Cats’ concluding home meet of the year with powerful showings from all parts of the team and a total of 35 first-place finishes.
The Wildcat men’s team triumphed over the Cougars with a score of 240-107, while the women also claimed victory with a result of 217-131. The men’s swimming team thoroughly dominated the competition, securing first place in every event.
The Cats initiated the meet on a high note on Friday, Dec. 20, claiming the top three positions in the Women’s 400 Medley Relay, the event’s opening race, and the top two positions in the Men’s 400 Medley Relay.
The Cats concluded the meet with the same strength they displayed at the start, finishing Saturday’s events with another relay triumph in the 400 Free Relay for both male and female competitors.
The competition was marked by impressive performances from swimmers all around the team, including Paige Armstrong, Kayman Neal, Mason Nyboer and Ralph Daleiden.
Neal, a first-year student, captured two individual first place finishes for the Cats, winning the 200 Back (1:56.18) and the 200 Free (1:49.36). Neal’s finish in the 200 Back also earned her an NCAA “B” Cut.
Armstrong secured first place in both the 100 Back (53.68) and the 200 IM (2:02.12). Besides her individual victories, Armstrong participated in Arizona’s first-place Women’s 400 Medley and Women’s 200 Medley Relays.
Nyboer exhibited dominance in long-distance events, achieving the fastest times in the 1650 Free (15:20.73) and the 500 Free (4:25.23). Nyboer’s time in the 1650 Free granted him an NCAA “B” Cut.
Daleiden continued his already impressive season, taking first in the Men’s 100 and 200 Freestyle events, while also contributing to the first-place 400 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay teams. Daleiden has already secured NCAA “B” Cut times in the 200 Free (1:32.17), which he achieved at the Wolfpack GAC Invite in November.
The diving team from Arizona delivered an outstanding performance against the Cougars. On Friday, freshman Maria Colombo won first place in the Women’s 3m event (277.96), and junior Gage DuBois clinched first place in the Men’s 3m event (373.43). Colin Agor closely followed DuBois, achieving a score of 336.45 for second place.
DuBois dominated the diving events against the Cougars, finishing first in the Men’s Platform event on Saturday with a score of 381.83, more than 80 points ahead of the nearest competitor from BYU, who placed third. Arizona’s Theo Hrach took second in the Men’s Platform and secured a Diving Zones cut with a final score of 328.05. Zara Ayazi also achieved a Zones cut with her second-place finish (2:33.03) in the Platform event.
The Wildcat women will return to Hillenbrand on Jan. 3 to compete against Northern Arizona University.
