LAKE CHARLES, La. – The women’s basketball team at Southeastern Louisiana University triumphed with a convincing 82-56 win against McNeese during their away game on Saturday afternoon at the Legacy Center.

Five Lady Lions scored in double digits, showcasing diverse scoring abilities to lift their record to 2-0 in Southland Conference competition against McNeese (5-7, 0-1 SLC). Seasoned player Alexius Horne topped all players with 19 points, coupled with four rebounds and two assists, contributing to Southeastern’s (8-3, 2-0 SLC) authoritative win.

Junior transfer Lexi Alexander (12 points) had an impressive outing, hitting 60.0 percent from the floor alongside seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Allasia Washington ignited the offense off the bench for Southeastern with a season-best 11 points and six rebounds, boasting a 3-5 shooting performance from the field in 14 minutes. Cheyanne Daniels (10 points) finished strong with a flawless shooting finish of 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line.

Seniors Taylor Bell and Kaili Chamberlin also contributed 10 points each, further energizing SLU’s momentum from the bench in the second half. Jalencia Pierre led the squad with four assists, as the Lady Lions capitalized on 21 points stemming from turnovers.

Southeastern began with an excellent momentum with an 11-4-point lead in the initial minutes against the Cowgirls, effectively setting the game’s tone. Horne and Alexander quickly collaborated in the paint, forming a potent tandem for the Lady Lions to establish an early command. McNeese found its footing midway through the first quarter, leveraging seven second-chance opportunities to narrow the gap to 11 points by the end of the period, 24-13.

In the second quarter, the Lady Lions intensified their defensive efforts, stifling the Cowgirls during their offensive plays. Southeastern continued to dominate in the paint, amassing 12 points in that area during the second quarter. SLU maintained its aggressive approach, adding nine points from the bench to its six-point contributions midway through the quarter. McNeese showed resilience, gaining some momentum late in the half with back-to-back scores by Boston Berry (eight points).

SLU ended the first half with a 42-28-point advantage heading into the break. The Lady Lions secured a 28-10 lead in paint points and an 18-10 edge in bench contributions against McNeese, shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Returning from halftime, the Cowgirls displayed determination as Mireia Yespes (10 points) stepped up to create challenges in the paint. The senior forward achieved her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds in the game. Sophomore Paris Guillory (13 points) also began to shine from distance, with a 3-5 success rate from the three-point line and 4-9 from the field for McNeese. The Cowgirls found their rhythm with an eight-point scoring streak midway through the third quarter, closing the gap to just seven points. However, Southeastern responded with an 11-point scoring surge to conclude the third quarter at 64-40.

Both teams carried momentum into the fourth quarter, but Washington kept delivering for Southeastern with consecutive transition scores. Yespes and Guillory made efforts to respond for the Cowgirls, yet SLU continued to forge ahead, extending its lead. Azjah Reeves (eight points) and Boston Berry (eight points) remained aggressive, penetrating the lane for McNeese, providing bursts of energy, but the Lady Lions’ bench ultimately presented significant challenges for the Cowgirls.

Late in the fourth quarter, McNeese managed a four-point scoring streak but could not significantly reduce Southeastern’s lead. SLU capped off their performance with 50 points in the paint, 37 bench points, and 15 points from second chances while demonstrating efficiency with 51.6 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three-point range, and 63.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Southeastern next returns to the University Center to battle new conference member UTRGV on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. The upcoming game will be available for streaming on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to start the new year stylishly and don their freshest shoes in support of the Lady Lions during the Vaqueros’ visit to Hammond, America.
