On December 23, starting at 11:15 a.m. for around 20 minutes, Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, conversed via telephone with H.E. Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The outline of the telephone discussions is as follows.
- Minister Cho outlined the current circumstances in the ROK. Both Ministers appreciated that their governments have maintained close communication, including interactions between the two leaders and ministers, and agreed on the necessity of continuing this close communication.
- The ministers also reiterated, as confirmed by Prime Minister Ishiba and Acting President Han Duck-soo, to advance preparations for exchange programs and other activities for the 60th anniversary of the normalization of relations between Japan and the ROK next year, recognizing the significance of these activities for the future of the citizens of both nations and the bilateral relations.
- Both Ministers reiterated the significance of close collaboration, including on policies towards North Korea, between Japan and the ROK, as well as among Japan, the ROK, and the US, which remains assured even amid various complex situations.
