This week, Dexcom made history as the inaugural medical device manufacturer to incorporate generative AI into a continuous glucose monitor.

The organization has integrated generative AI into its Stelo glucose monitor, which it launched four months prior. This device is an over-the-counter glucose biosensor designed to enable individuals — including those with and without diabetes — to actively monitor their metabolic wellness.

According to Dexcom COO Jake Leach, the introduction of generative AI to this glucose monitor will facilitate a more thorough analysis of users’ health data trends.

The newly established AI platform processes information from diverse sources — such as the Stelo biosensor, meal tracking, and other wearable devices, he observed.

“One of the main pieces of feedback we receive from users is their desire for a more customized experience. What sets our new [generative AI] platform apart for Stelo users is its capability to provide better context regarding the effects of their diet, sleep patterns, lifestyle choices, and more on their glucose levels,” Leach clarified.

He additionally mentioned that the AI platform enhances the current “weekly insights” feature in the Stelo application. Users will now obtain more individualized suggestions on steps they can take to enhance their glucose regulation.

“For example, if you notice spikes in your glucose levels following specific foods or times of the day, a short walk might be a good option,” Leach remarked. “Naturally, the insights will be customized to each user and their unique lifestyle decisions. My recommendations will differ from yours. In a sense, Stelo will function as a supportive health ‘coach’, assisting consumers in making proactive, informed lifestyle choices.”

Stelo’s advanced generative AI features are powered by Google Cloud’s AI models. By utilizing the existing AI models from the tech powerhouse as a framework, Dexcom was enabled to develop its tailored platform to collate and evaluate data from various sources, explained Leach.

However, he noted that Dexcom does not share any user information with Google.

“Millions of individuals can benefit from how our GenAI platform can influence their metabolic health over time,” Leach asserted. “This is merely the onset. We are confident that AI will have a transformative influence on diabetes management and healthcare by substantially delivering a more personalized experience, offering more actionable insights, and consequently enhancing health outcomes for users.”
