RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Educational institutions throughout North Carolina are closed for the winter holiday break. This season is a perfect opportunity for families to enjoy activities together before and after Christmas.
ABC11 has assembled this compilation of enjoyable family activities available in Central North Carolina.
The open-air ice rink located in downtown Raleigh started operations on November 23 and will be available until January 20. Admission for THE RINK is $15, which includes skate rental, while spectator admission is priced at $6. Tickets can be acquired online or directly at the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts box office.
The gates are open for the 2024 Chinese Lantern Festival at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Artisans from China have assembled entirely new displays for this year.
Schedule: The festival lasts from November 16 to January 12. Between December 21 and 29, the Box Office will extend its holiday hours from 2 pm to 9 pm. Regular hours will resume on December 30.
*Please remember: Hours on December 24 are from 5 pm to 8 pm. The festival is NOT OPEN on Christmas Day.*
This marks the ninth year of the festival in North Carolina, and it has become a cherished family event, with most evenings reaching full capacity, so don’t forget to secure your tickets!
All aboard! The 2024 model train exhibition is now live at the Durham Main Library in the downtown area. What a delightful way to enhance children’s holiday joy than with a festive train exhibit?
Guests will enjoy watching ten model trains journey through various scenes, including the State Fair, Winter Town, Spooky Town, and others. Click here for additional details.
Cary’s outdoor skating rink is currently operational through February in Fenton Square.

Happy Feet Planet is an indoor amusement facility for children. They operate two venues in central NC targeted at children aged 10 and younger.
Apex: 3419 Apex Peakway and a newly opened site in Clayton: 231 Guy Road. Advance reservations are recommended due to significant demand. It’s also an excellent venue for organizing birthday celebrations.
Exploring the North Carolina Zoo is consistently a delightful adventure for families, but there’s a distinct spot for them–the Kidzone which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Positioned near the North American Plaza, it serves as an excellent excuse to encourage outdoor play!
Per the Zoo’s website, the natural play zones in Kidzone feature: Fort Creation, where kids can construct forts in the forest behind the barn. This area is accessible seasonally, but there’s a stream where children can jump and splash about. Remember to bring your rain boots or water sandals! If your young one is still in diapers, swim diapers are necessary. Additionally, there’s a Treetop Trail meant for the entire family to enjoy. You might also want to visit the Mud Cafe to order a plate of crunchy blueberry pancakes for breakfast or grilled cheese and dirt for lunch. Don’t forget to give your chef a tip! Kids can also practice their aim in mud-slinging, utilizing a tub of gooey mud and a target to hit.
Click on Kidzone to discover more about all the outdoor excitement.
