Younger individuals in Ferndown with specialized educational needs and disabilities have taken part in enjoyable and instructive cooking classes, made possible through funding from Local Alliance Groups (LAG).

The LAG funding has effectively facilitated five stimulating sessions throughout the school vacations for 10-15 children aged 5-13 years.

These interactions were developed to fill a notable void in holiday activities geared towards this demographic, offering significant opportunities for both children and families.

Throughout the sessions, participants had the opportunity to prepare afternoon tea, craft pizzas, and bake cupcakes.

Every child received aprons, chef hats, and bowls to bring home, promoting continued practice of their newly acquired abilities outside of the classes.

The initiative has not only provided pleasure for the children but has also nurtured essential social interaction among parents, especially those with children requiring additional support.

The sessions were conducted by a parent who recognizes the distinct difficulties encountered by families with children having SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).

The initiative has garnered enormous positive reviews, with one parent commenting, “It’s so wonderful to see my child so involved in this activity and eagerly anticipating the school holidays for us to return.” The children themselves are just as excited, often asking, “What can we do next time?”

Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education, and Skills, remarked:

“This serves as a brilliant example of a community-driven program creating a substantial impact. The commitment exhibited by all participants, and the joy it brings to children and their families, is commendable.”

Nicky Hornsby, manager at The Centre in Ferndown, added:

“After consultations with parents of children with SEND, it became evident that there were few activities available during the holidays for kids over 5 and under 12.

“Witnessing the pride children take in their creations and the happiness it brings to families makes this program immensely valuable.

We are thankful for the backing of the East Locality LAG, and we are excited about offering even more sessions in the future.”

In response to growing demand, sessions for children without special needs will also be introduced next year.

This initiative was made feasible thanks to funding from Dorset Council, allocated by the Local Alliance.

This allowed Ferndown Family Hub to acquire all necessary materials for the activities.

Local Alliance Groups consist of members who have a genuine interest in enhancing the lives of children and families.

There are six local alliance groups in Dorset, each representing a unique geographical area. The groups establish priorities and formulate plans to enhance conditions for children and young individuals in their locality.
