CHICAGO (WLS) — Travel activity is in full swing at Chicago O’Hare Airport this Sunday.

Traffic is flowing smoothly Sunday afternoon, with TSA wait times averaging around 20 minutes, although a noticeable surge of passengers is expected between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Monday is anticipated to be the peak day at O’Hare prior to Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, Sunday, Dec. 29 is forecasted to be the busiest at Midway Airport.

According to the TSA, they are preparing to screen approximately 40 million travelers by Jan. 2, marking a rise of over 6% compared to last year.

United Airlines indicates it is bracing for its most active travel period ever, adding hundreds of additional flights daily.

This has positively impacted travelers, many of whom expressed relief at the absence of significant delays thus far.

“It’s the perfect day. Shouldn’t be too hectic,” remarked Gabriella, who is heading to London. “Everything’s smooth so far. My husband received an upgrade, so we are in good spirits.”

“It’s a bit stressful but necessary to get through for the holidays,” mentioned Will Donohue, who arrived from Minnesota.

American Airlines is also anticipating a similar uptick in passengers, with plans to distribute over 6 million bags of pretzels.

Some passengers are still adjusting to the bustle at O’Hare, including Elaine from Wisconsin, who is boarding her first flight in a decade.

“The Milwaukee airport is quite calm. This one is the busiest I’ve ever encountered. Goodness,” she exclaimed.

Numerous Chicago residents mentioned they’re escaping the chilly temperatures and traveling to warmer locations.

“I’m really excited to be taking off from here. Hopefully, we get on. We’re on standby, so we’ll find out,” said Alyssa, who is destined for San Diego.

For anyone seeking to book a last-minute journey, Expedia indicates that the most affordable flights will be available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. One of the priciest days to fly will be Sunday, Dec. 22!

Ninety percent of travelers this year are planning to drive to their holiday destinations. AAA estimates that 107 million people will take to the roads.

Fuel costs are also lower than last year, as the national average hovers around $3.04 for regular gasoline.

The most optimal time to travel was Sunday before noon. Following that, experts predict the highways will be congested.
