If there’s one aspect that the USA TODAY Travel team enjoys more than discovering astonishing destinations, it’s sharing those experiences with our audience. Over the past year, our team loaded their suitcases (and quite a few snacks) to fly, cruise, and even camp at some of the most remarkable places on Earth. From tranquil coastal retreats to lively cities that teem with energy, 2024 was filled with adventures – and we are excited to present our favorite locations that you should include in your 2025 travel itinerary.

These aren’t just your average suggestions. We’re talking about five locations that captivated us with their allure, gastronomy, culture, and, indeed, their picturesque vistas worthy of Instagram.

So, where should your next journey take you? Here are the five spots that resonated with us in 2024 and that stand to cast the same spell – and perhaps even a bit more – in 2025.

Honor this ‘continent’ properly: Eastern Australia

A single visit to Australia doesn’t do it justice. There are numerous astounding and various regions to discover, and my time in Tasmania left me desiring more – even if it entails another 14-hour flight.

Following an exquisite trip to Tasmania, Australia’s Gold Coast was continuously beckoning me. While Tasmania enchants with its unblemished wilderness, the Gold Coast presents a sunny contrast with its stunning beaches, lively nightlife, and even theme parks.

The coastline of the Gold Coast is perfect for beach enthusiasts. The relaxed beach atmosphere encourages you to bask in the sun, surf world-class waves, or enjoy a peaceful walk at sunset.

While Tasmania dazzles with its national parks, the Gold Coast boasts Warner Bros. Movie World and Dreamworld. But no need to worry; if you crave a classic experience of Australia’s diverse flora and fauna, the hinterlands are accessible, and there are numerous sanctuaries to explore. Adventurers can traverse the verdant rainforests of Lamington and Springbrook National Parks, which are adorned with waterfalls, hiking paths, and native animals. Glow Worm Caves and the Natural Bridge exemplify a beauty that mirrors Tasmania’s splendid natural landscape — albeit with a tropical twist.

You won’t experience hunger here. The vibrant culinary scene brims with fresh seafood, rooftop lounges, and meals from all around the globe.

Having savored Tasmania’s elegance, the Gold Coast is my next destination in Eastern Australia — likely during the U.S. winter. Merging Australia’s renowned coastal atmosphere with eclectic attractions and warm weather, it makes for the ultimate follow-up journey.

European vibe without the lengthy flight: Montreal, Canada

Montreal caught me off guard. I always had the desire to visit the Canadian city someday but hadn’t prioritized it – it’s conveniently close to the U.S., and I assumed I’d get there eventually.

After finally visiting for the first time this past spring, I now regret not having explored it years ago. Not only does its historic quarter exude a European vibe without the need for a long flight, but it also boasts a multitude of cultural institutions, a dynamic culinary scene, and a bustling cruise port that offers small-ship experiences.

I visited in late May and discovered the mild weather was perfect for exploring on foot or via public transport – both of which are effortless in this pedestrian-friendly city. In addition to landmarks such as the Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica, visitors should take time to explore local enterprises, which offer a glimpse into the city’s unique character.

I also spent four days indulging in restaurants and coffee shops, savoring French cuisine, delectable pastries, and finely crafted espresso. Additionally, I sampled locally produced gin at Cirka Distilleries (be sure to order the Pomelo liqueur, made from pomelos and grapefruits). In the commercial district, Laurier West Avenue, shop owners welcomed customers into their establishments.

In terms of international travel, Montreal felt very accessible. It’s a relatively short drive or flight from various regions in the U.S. And despite French being the official language in Quebec, everyone I encountered was also proficient in English.

There remains an abundance of the city and attractions that I didn’t manage to explore during my brief visit. Thankfully, it’s only a few hours away.

So much to explore, so little time: Japan

Every few days since May, I’ve voiced: “I yearn to return to Japan.”

My three days there were far from sufficient for experiencing Tokyo, let alone the rest of the nation. I dedicated the majority of my stay at Tokyo Disney Resort, which itself is a must-see for theme park enthusiasts like myself, and home to the breathtaking new area, Fantasy Springs. I easily could have spent an entire week exploring theme parks alone, including spots like Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Sanrio Puroland in Tama, and Ghibli Park in Nagakute. However, there’s an abundance more to explore, from lively metropolises advancing in technology to serene landscapes that appear timeless.

The extensive range of public transport alternatives makes traveling to any location efficient, though it isn’t always straightforward. I found myself disoriented attempting to connect between various subway lines that were several city blocks apart in Tokyo, yet what transpired exemplified Japanese politeness: After inquiring for directions, a businessman who was somewhat unsure mistakenly directed me incorrectly. Once he recognized his error, he hurried to correct my path. He could have easily continued with his day, yet like everyone else I encountered, he demonstrated remarkable kindness.

The cuisine was truly delightful. I continue to reminisce about the numerous convenience stores, vending machine delicacies, and food stall snacks that were both flavorful and affordable. Everything is crafted with pride and attention, even the fast food. On my next trip, I aspire to try more formal dining experiences, such as wagyu steak omakase. I eagerly anticipate returning.

A hidden treasure to the North: British Columbia

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia isn’t frequently found on the travel itineraries of many Americans, yet it is certainly deserving of a visit and fairly accessible.

The interior region of British Columbia is its historical fruit production area, making it an excellent destination for wine tasting of varieties that are hard to find on this side of the border. Moreover, it is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking and biking trails, summer lake activities, and nearby ski resorts in the winter. Additionally, there is a vibrant farm-to-table dining culture and accommodation options across various price ranges.

If it weren’t for work commitments, I likely would never have discovered the Okanagan, and now I eagerly anticipate my return.

As the region heals from wildfires and some recent severe winters, the vineyards have an opportunity to innovate with their crops, and I would be particularly thrilled to revisit and taste some of their new, more adventurous wines. Since returning, I have recommended to almost all my friends and family that they should explore it for at least a long weekend if they seek a getaway.

It’s a quintessential bucket-list destination for a reason: Fiji

Fiji is one of those enchanting, distant locales on everyone’s bucket list – and following my visit in June, I can attest it fully meets the expectations. (It’s also not too challenging to reach there; a direct flight from Los Angeles is available.) It now occupies a spot on my list of places I’m excited to revisit.

This destination allows its rich heritage and breathtaking surroundings to shine. Not only does Fiji boast some of the most picturesque beaches I’ve ever encountered – a significant claim considering I reside in Hawaii – but it also presents numerous adventurous opportunities. I swam with manta rays during the day and reef sharks at night, and I rode the famous Cloudbreak wave as the sky turned pink during sunset. Those are among my most cherished travel memories ever.

Fiji is also striving to become a sustainable destination, which is crucial for an island nation particularly susceptible to climate change. Visitors can contribute to supporting Fiji by engaging in activities such as volunteering with local nonprofits dedicated to coral reef conservation or spending time in local villages to gain a deeper understanding of Fijian culture up close.

If I hear someone casually mention Fiji – even if it’s in relation to “Survivor” – I strongly encourage them to make a trip a reality. Plus, given its sub-tropical climate, you can visit any time of the year.
