What makes this location unique? A significant swell originating from the right direction creates steep, hollow waves on the south side of the Seal Beach pier, but it only occurs on rare winter days. And the moment is now. “During this season, it generally breaks only for a couple of days,” explained Justin Kahn, who was on shore after hours of surfing. “So, it’s quite exceptional when it occurs.”

Conditions for experts only. Surfer magazine formerly referred to the conditions at Seal Beach pier during significant swells as “back-breaking, madness.” Enormous barrels close to the shore can slam surfers directly into the sand, making it extremely perilous.

What is a ‘barrel’? A barrel occurs when the wave curves into a tube that surfers can ride through, surrounded by water. “It’s like this vision that only certain individuals experience in their lifetime,” remarked Dylan Sloan, who was taking a brief rest in the parking lot Monday morning before returning to the waves.

If you decide to go … remain on the shore with your camera unless you are an extremely skilled surfer and are familiar with the conditions. The surf is expected to rise even larger here as Christmas approaches.
