Holiday travel will be challenging for residents of Metro Detroit starting Monday afternoon, as a wintry mix or even snowfall is anticipated to move through Southeast Michigan.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the majority of Southeastern Michigan from 12:00 p.m. Monday until 1:00 a.m. Tuesday (10:00 p.m. Monday for our M-59 Corridor Counties) due to mixed wintry precipitation and accumulating snow, varying by your location within the region.
Overcast skies; wintry mix and snow developing later in the morning and extending into the afternoon. Possible snow accumulation along with some sleet and light freezing rain in other areas as temperatures rise. Regions closer to the state line might briefly transition to rain before reverting back to wintry conditions as temperatures fall. High: 35; temperatures will remain close to the freezing point in our northern areas. Winds: South 5-15 MPH with gusts potentially reaching 20 MPH.
Wintry mix and snow will cease near or shortly after midnight. Low: 32.
ALONG & NORTH OF M-59: These areas are expected to primarily experience snow this evening, except for a small possibility of sleet/mix near M-59 this afternoon/evening. These locales could receive 2 to 4 inches of snowfall, with areas near Saginaw and into the thumb potentially seeing 3 to 5 inches of snow.
ALONG & SOUTH OF M-59 to I-696/I-94 CORRIDOR: These areas might begin as snow before transitioning into a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and possibly some freezing rain. Areas from M-59 to I-696 could accumulate 1 to 2 inches of snow, then proceed to some sleet and freezing rain, where pockets of sleet and ice buildup may occur in certain locations.
SOUTH OF I-94 CORRIDOR: These areas will start with snow, quickly transitioning to a wintry mix, and locales in Eastern Wayne County and parts of Monroe County may briefly see rain before reverting to the wintry mix and then snow as the system exits the region. An inch or less of snow is anticipated, with light accumulation of sleet and freezing rain possible.
The wintry mix and snow will gradually diminish shortly after midnight tonight, and cloud cover will persist in the forecast overnight. Overnight lows will stay around the freezing point, extending into early Tuesday morning.
