For years, NORAD has employed advanced technology, such as radar, satellites, and aircraft, to trace Santa’s sleigh as it departs from the North Pole and journeys around the globe. What started as an unforeseen phone call in 1955 has transformed into a sophisticated holiday event available to families on desktops, mobile applications, or by dialing 877-HI-NORAD.

Santa’s journey, famously driven by eight tiny reindeer (nine if you include Rudolph with his iconic luminous red nose), is offered to families in various languages, enhancing the inclusivity of the tradition. This availability is facilitated through a collaboration with Interpreters Unlimited Inc., a company located in San Diego with a branch in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where NORAD is based.

The organization’s network of over 10,000 interpreters ensures that kids around the world can experience Santa’s adventure in their languages. “When the children see where Santa is, they can view it in their language,” stated Shamus Sayed, vice president of Interpreters Unlimited. “Inclusion and visibility are incredibly essential.”

NORAD spokesperson Becky Farmer highlighted the global dimension of the initiative. “Santa tracking is a worldwide custom,” she stated. “Thus, we recognize the significance of making the tracker accessible to individuals globally.”
