Marie Robert Takes the Spotlight: New Correspondent for the Photography Section!

The Académie des Beaux-Arts has chosen Marie Robert as correspondent for the Photography Section.

Marie Robert serves as the chief curator at the Musée d’Orsay, overseeing photography and cinema. A former attendee of the École Normale Supérieure, she is an associate professor of economic and social sciences and possesses a diploma of advanced studies in cinematographic studies. She previously held positions as a curator at the Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires and at the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie, where she led the photography division, before joining the Musée d’Orsay in 2011.

Having curated approximately twenty photography exhibitions, her notable works include “Splendors and Miseries. Images of Prostitution, 1850-1910”, “Who’s Afraid of Women Photographers?” (2015), “Finally Cinema!” (2021), “A Model and Her Images. Lili Grenier’s Albums” (2023), and “Henri Rivière, The Man with the Camera” (2024). She has also taught the history of photography through a gender lens and co-edited the book “A World History of Women Photographers” (Textuel, 2020) with Luce Lebart.

In 2023, she participated in a residency at the Académie of France in Rome (Villa Medici) aimed at creating a collection of photographs to enhance the visual heritage of the site and its community.

During her residency, she contemplated the emotional uses of photography, spearheaded the online debut of the participatory digital platform “Album of the Villa,” and presented her collection of images and narratives under the title “Souviens-toi de moi,” which took the form of a visual display that was later transformed into a large-format scrapbook.

She holds administrative roles in the French Society of Photography, the Jacques Henri Lartigue Donation, PhotoSaintGermain, and the Friends of Ithaca.
