Today (Christmas Eve), we are being encouraged to perform safety inspections on their children’s devices
As we approach the significant day, a children’s safeguarding charity in North Yorkshire is urging parents and guardians to conduct safety inspections on devices today.
The recommendations from the NSPCC are intended so that children can relish their new gadgets for Christmas tomorrow without the need to confiscate their mobile devices or establish parental controls in advance.
Gail Sayles serves as the local Campaigns Manager in North Yorkshire.
She expressed:
“When my husband and I were purchasing an Xbox or PlayStation for our children during their younger years, we made sure to set it up beforehand, rather than waiting until the big day itself, as that diminishes all the excitement.
“Unbox it, examine it, get everything configured, implement the safety settings and safeguards before putting it back in the box and voilà.”
According to the NSPCC’s website, it outlines the hazards associated with game consoles. It mentions ‘there exists a risk of them encountering inappropriate content.’
‘The game might not align with your child’s age or capabilities, or they could be disturbed by a message or comment from another user. Your child may also communicate with others while gaming – this could be with someone they do not recognize.’
Highlighting the dangers of mobile phones, it further explains:
‘There are numerous features including straightforward access to browsers and various apps where your child could be exposed to inappropriate material.
‘Possessing their own device also allows them to communicate or message independently, and individuals they don’t know could reach out to them.’
Gail also provided the following guidance:
“It’s essential to maintain these ongoing discussions from an early age. We understand that 21% of 3-4 year-olds nowadays possess their own mobile phone.
“Hence, even if your child does not own all the technology, their friends likely do and they communicate among themselves.”
