Global Affairs Canada today released the following declaration:
“On December 22, 2024, the Government of the People’s Republic of China unjustly targeted two Canadian civil society organizations and twenty advocates for human rights with sanctions.
“Global Affairs Canada expresses solidarity with members of the Canadian Tibet Committee and the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and condemns the Chinese government’s decision to penalize them for advocating for human rights.
“The Government of Canada will not accept any threats, acts of violence, or harassment against individuals in Canada, or towards their families and friends, based on their political views or to suppress dissenting opinions.
“Numerous independent United Nations experts and other recognized multilateral systems have urged China to respond substantively to credible claims of human rights abuses. China must honor its commitments under international law. Canada perceives scrutiny of its own human rights practices as a chance to enhance its performance, and continues to encourage China to do the same.
“Canada persists in advising all Canadians in China to maintain a high level of vigilance in China due to the risks associated with arbitrary enforcement of local regulations. Global Affairs Canada is prepared to provide consular support to any Canadian citizens in China affected by these sanctions.
