Following an outage that resulted in a nationwide ground halt of American Airlines flights on Tuesday morning, 5 out of the 6 scheduled flights for the day at Columbia Regional Airport encountered delays, all attributed to inclement weather nationwide.

Tamara Bentler, whose journey from COU to Mississippi was postponed for over 4 hours, stated that the airline initially did not provide a clear explanation for the delay.

“I have the app, but I feel like I could receive alerts, since I registered for text notifications,” Bentler remarked. “However, I feel like I wasn’t adequately informed via text.”

The concern about delayed notifications was echoed by several other travelers.

“[The airline should] certainly communicate more rapidly,” expressed Trent Nichols, who traveled from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Columbia. “Because I was receiving updates from my family, like ‘hey your flight got delayed,’ and then I would get the alert [from American Airlines] 15 or 20 minutes afterwards.”

In relation to the effect on travel arrangements, Nichols commented, “I know many others had their plans disrupted at the airport. People were contemplating whether to book hotels or return home and wait. Fortunately, there wasn’t much going on, at least during the daytime, for me.”

Dornubari Ajinwo’s initial flight, from Miami to Chicago, was delayed by 90 minutes.

“I was anxious because it’s Christmas Eve, and I didn’t want to be stuck on the road during Christmas,” Ajinwo stated. “I just wish to be at home with my children.”

Thanks to her lengthy layover, Ajinwo managed to catch her connecting flight to Columbia.

Christina Robinson, a COU customer service representative, noted that the customer service team aids travelers by rebooking, rerouting, and offering meals or hotel arrangements if needed.

Robinson also pointed out that the passenger volume at COU this year is roughly equivalent to last year, with the majority of flights operating at full capacity.
