OTTAWA, December 25, 2024

This evening at dusk, Jewish communities across Canada and globally will herald the commencement of Hanukkah.

Throughout this eight-day festivity, Jewish individuals congregate with family and friends to honor the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the Maccabean Revolt, an occurrence that transpired in 200 BCE. Within the temple, there existed merely a single jar of oil – sufficient for only one day – but it astonishingly lasted for eight continuous days. To celebrate this miracle and the victory of light over darkness, Jewish households illuminate the menorah after sunset. They also share fried delicacies, like latkes and sufganiyot, with their loved ones.

As Jewish communities prepare to observe Hanukkah, our government reaffirms its dedication to ensuring that the Jewish community in Canada can practice their faith freely and safely. We will never condone any form of antisemitism.

To this end, we recently introduced Canada’s inaugural Action Plan on Combatting Hate to more effectively identify and thwart antisemitism. Central to this initiative is the new Canada Community Security Program, which assists communities targeted by hate with funding and resources for self-protection. The Action Plan also allocates essential funds for the memorialization of the Holocaust, including the establishment of the new Montreal Holocaust Museum and the creation of a National Holocaust Remembrance Program. Additionally, the Government of Canada introduced The Canadian Handbook on the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, an essential resource to better equip Canadians in recognizing and combating antisemitism.

Jewish individuals have significantly influenced Canada and continue to make invaluable contributions today. May Hanukkah serve as a reminder of the strength of perseverance and the spark of hope that eternally shines through. I extend my best wishes to all Jewish communities in Canada and worldwide for a celebration filled with joy and optimism.

Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
