Caution Waves: Ocean Beach Issues Strong Swimming Warning Amid High Surf Alerts

Due to a high surf warning in effect until Sunday, swimming is highly discouraged at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach because of perilous rip currents, fire department officials declared Thursday morning.

Although wading to knee depth is permitted, beach visitors are urged to proceed with utmost care, as individuals have been carried out to sea in as little as three feet of water, vanishing in seconds, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The National Weather Service forecasted Wednesday that the wider Bay Area shoreline could experience substantial breaking waves ranging from 20 to 30 feet starting at 10 a.m. Thursday and concluding at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Conditions for swimming and surfing will be deemed hazardous, according to the weather service.

Rip currents represent the foremost danger at most shorelines, and anyone who finds themselves caught in a rip current should avoid resisting the current, but should swim parallel to the shore and then inward toward the beach, as advised by the fire department.

Pets must be kept on a leash, and beachgoers should refrain from swimming after a pet if it is pulled into the ocean. Most dogs can manage to exit the water independently, only to observe their owner being rescued, the fire department mentioned.

During high surf scenarios, waves can appear suddenly and rush across the beach, dragging individuals into the sea from rocks, jetties, and shorelines, the weather service indicated.
