NASA is embracing the holiday mood, presenting some spectacular images of the Christmas Tree Cluster and the Cosmic Wreath. The Cosmic Wreath (formally referred to by the less festive designation ‘NGC 602’) is situated at the edge of the Small Magellanic Cloud. This image merges data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory with a previously released image from the agency’s James Webb Space Telescope. Located around 200,000 light-years from Earth, the dark ring-like silhouette of the wreath is comprised of thick layers of dust, resulting in an enchanting mix of oranges, yellows, greens, and blues.

The Christmas Tree Cluster (NGC 2264) consists of youthful stars estimated to be between one to five million years old. Positioned about 2,500 light-years from Earth, this cluster derived its name from the swirling gases that create its distinctive shape. Employing Chandra data (in red, purple, blue, and white) alongside optical data (in green and violet) captured by astrophotographer Michael Clow, the ‘tree’ appears to be decorated with glimmering stars.
