Exploring the Frontier: MMO Evolution and Gaming Innovations of 2024

If you have been following MassivelyOP for some time, you likely realize that we enjoy science quite a bit around here, and there’s no escaping the truth that it exerts a significant influence on the digital gaming realm. Thus, we have been gathering our science-related publications under the “For Science!” banner for several years now, although our collection has become smaller recently, and it’s not due to a lack of interest or effort. Last year, we ventured that the avarice and desire for generative AI had extracted a lot of resources (and funding, let’s be honest) from the research sphere concerning gaming. However, there’s likely more to it than that; we’re simply not receiving the torrent of “video games don’t incite violence, in fact” and “loot boxes are gambling but no one is concerned anymore” research that we once did. Can’t report on what isn’t available!

Perhaps that will shift in the upcoming years, but for the moment, we’re compiling what we did receive in 2024, from the industry participating in the total solar eclipse phenomenon to the unfortunate downturn of strategy games to Project Discovery – indeed, CCP Games and the EVE Online community dedicated their time to combating cancer this year, bless them. We even observed one studio being quite evasive with charts and graphs! Ahh, data are so entertaining.
