Healthcare facilities are experiencing a rise in admissions as the drop in temperature leads to an upsurge in respiratory conditions, while the holiday period fosters an escalation in lifestyle-related ailments due to more indulgent food consumption.

An article from 24 Oras by Marisol Abdurahman on Thursday indicated that medical centers are on high alert due to a 25% to 30% rise in patients suffering from upper respiratory tract infections compared to the prior week. The majority of cases were observed among the elderly and young children.

“With the erratic climate, we are indeed witnessing a significant increase in upper respiratory tract infections. This is likely due to multiple factors, including the weather. Additionally, it relates to conditions at home. Sometimes, they tend to forget their medication,” stated Dr. Kristine Joy Dizon, chief resident in internal medicine at Tondo Medical Center.

Dizon advised the public to minimize outings, wear masks if necessary, and seek medical advice upon the onset of symptoms.

Medical practitioners are also observing the rise in illnesses linked to lifestyle choices, commonly referred to as “holiday heart syndrome.”

Dizon pointed out that many of her stroke patients are currently in their early 30s;

“The cases of stroke, hypertension, and related complications have alarmingly risen. We have also had some patients suffering from heart attacks. The rate of admissions is about 40% more compared to last week,” said Dizon.

Dizon recommended adhering to a balanced diet and responsible drinking practices, steering clear of greasy and salty meals, and maintaining prescribed medications to avert complications. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
