I attempted to call my son, but nothing could distract him from gazing out the window of our turboprop aircraft. Even at 20,000 feet, the turquoise waters beneath were so transparent he could nearly see schools of fish.
Planning this journey to Turks and Caicos had taken years, after we had to scrap our original plans three years earlier due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, upon our arrival at Ambergris Cay, a stunning private-island resort that had just opened its doors, I realized that the early test had been a hidden blessing. Clearly, we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to visit Ambergris Cay back then, and more significantly, my son, Mikel Kai, was now 9 and old enough to truly enjoy a solo vacation with his parents.
Upon disembarking the aircraft, we were welcomed with refreshing mocktails and a set of keys — we would be navigating our own golf cart to our three-bedroom villa, Poseidon. While my son relished the tropical fruit platter and freshly squeezed juice, I was already plotting to return with the whole family for another holiday. That night, the two of us enjoyed a five-course meal beneath the stars, illuminated by tiki torches and a bonfire; a guitarist serenaded us with the perfect laid-back tunes.
The next day, my husband, Miguel, joined us, and we set off — discovering the islands via golf cart, boat, and on foot, embarking on long walks along white-sand beaches to gather sand dollars.
Subsequently, we checked into the Parrot Cay and Pine Cay, two additional private-island resorts reachable by boat from Providenciales — or Provo, as the locals call the main island. Following a wonderful massage at Parrot Cay, I found a breezy, shaded spot overlooking a lagoon where I could read my book. I noticed a well-known musician, but I opted not to interrupt her tranquility or mine. The sales director later informed me that this was her fifth visit within six months, as she cherished the seclusion.
For the concluding segment of our journey, we visited Provo. Our first destination was Amanyara, which showcased the pinnacle of luxury, offering pavilions and villas ranging from two to six bedrooms, all attended by private chefs and butlers. The wellness facilities were extensive, featuring tennis, pickleball, basketball, and Pilates reformers. I was delighted to discover numerous activities for children available at this resort, including a sailing academy and scavenger hunts. Simultaneously, it was ideal for a romantic getaway or honeymoon.
We also experienced stays at The Palms, The Shore Club, and Rock House. While my husband and son engaged in kiteboarding at the distant Long Bay Beach, I took the opportunity to explore other properties along Grace Bay. Each island and resort proved to be fantastic, each with its unique charm.
This will complicate the decision-making when I eventually return to Turks and Caicos with my entire family.
