“Spain’s Travel Advisory Update: Level 2 Alert & Vaccination Guidance”

The U.S. Department of State has recently reaffirmed its Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution for the Kingdom of Spain.

On December 23, 2024, the State Department announced that visitors to Spain should exercise heightened caution due to civil disturbances. Additionally, protests are prevalent and could arise in reaction to political or economic matters, on politically significant holidays, and during global events.

International visitors traveling to Spain are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive digital notifications, which facilitates finding you in case of an emergency.

While in Spain, U.S. nationals can visit the U.S. Embassy located at Calle Serrano, 75, 28006 Madrid.

From a health standpoint, the U.S. CDC and the UK advise travelers to verify the list of vaccinations and medications required at least a month prior to their trip to Spain. For instance, the ECDC reported instances of locally acquired dengue in Spain in 2024.

Dengue is a disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, noted in Spain’s Catalonia region.

Colin Johnston, Senior Medical Entomologist at UKHSA, informed local media, “The rising number of dengue (8) and malaria cases that we are observing in the UK are related to travel.”

As of December 25, 2024, Dengue is a vaccine-preventable illness.
