The Otago Regional Council has today cautioned individuals against swimming in Otokia Creek at Dunedin’s Brighton Beach, due to bacterial presence.

In a statement on social media, the council indicated that “recent tests” of water quality revealed elevated bacteria levels in the creek.

“Individuals are advised against swimming or engaging in other recreational activities in the water until further notice. A warning sign has been erected.”

Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (Lawa) mentioned that the creek was last tested on December 23.

It noted that the creek might be susceptible to elevated bacteria levels from upstream sources.

“Following calm weather conditions, swimming is typically safe, but after significant rainfall, this site can experience increased bacteria levels. We recommend avoiding the water for 48 hours after heavy rain.”

Earlier this week, the ORC issued alerts regarding toxic algae, advising individuals to refrain from entering three southern waterways.

Alerts were deployed on Tuesday for Lake Waihola, Aronui Dam, and the Cardrona River.

“Observations indicate the presence of toxic algae (cyanobacteria) blooms currently in the Cardrona River.”

“These blooms are presently detected in the lower reaches (below State Highway 6), but are likely found upstream as well.”

“We recommend avoiding contact with the water at Cardrona River and other locations with toxic algae,” the council communicated on social media.

Similar alerts were separately issued for the other bodies of water.

In humans, exposure may result in rashes, nausea, upset stomachs, and sensations of tingling or numbness around the mouth or fingertips.

In animals, it could cause lethargy, muscle twitching, rapid breathing, convulsions, or paralysis.

“If you or your pet experience any health issues, consult a doctor or veterinarian immediately,” the council advised.
