The city of Aurora is entering the esports landscape with its first Rocket League tournament on Monday.
This marks the first event in the Aurora Gaming Series, and city representatives indicate it is the first video gaming tournament in the nation organized by a local government.
“The Aurora Gaming Series offers an excellent opportunity to connect with our youth and enhance community spirit,” stated Jon Zaghloul, the city’s communications manager. “We are eager to create history while establishing ourselves as a premier destination for esports in the Chicagoland region and beyond.”
This competitive tournament will host 16 two-player teams competing for a $500 grand prize and a uniquely designed trophy. It is scheduled to take place at UTime Gamers within Fox Valley Mall from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30.
Rocket League, which rapidly became a favorite among gamers and the esports community since its launch in 2015, is a vehicle-based soccer game where players maneuver fast cars in distinctive arenas, aiming to drive a large ball into the rival team’s goal.
Participants in the tournament include Adam Bauer from Westfield, Indiana, who ranks in the top 0.3% of Rocket League players globally. Additional players hail from Aurora, Chicago, Joliet, Montgomery, Naperville, Plainfield, and Houston, Texas.
The tournament’s top-ranked team, BNN, secured its spot by winning the qualifying event and is captained by Zachary Gonzalez, a varsity Rocket League competitor at Northern Illinois University.
The tournament will be streamed live on Aurora Community Television, accessible to local viewers on Xfinity Channel 10 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99, as well as live-streamed on Aurora’s YouTube and Twitch channels.
It is set to be aired on the Marquee Sports Network at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, marking the first esports event to be featured on the network.
