Charlotte Airport Braces for a Historic Surge in Post-Christmas Travelers!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Charlotte Douglas International Airport is thriving with activity during the peak season of holiday travel on the sixth day of what is anticipated to be the busiest 17-day period of the year.

From December 20 to January 5, airport authorities forecast that over 2.75 million individuals will depart from the airport.

December 26 and 27 are designated as “peak days” at the airport as travelers conclude their Christmas plans and others begin their New Year’s journeys. The airport anticipates that holiday travel this year will be approximately 10% busier than in 2023.

For perspective, the Thanksgiving travel season just a month ago set a record with 990,000 travelers departing the airport from November 21 to December 2.

Authorities are advising passengers to prepare for similar crowds this festive season.

Charlotte Douglas Airport provides several services to assist passengers in navigating the busy terminals:

• Security wait times: The airport offers real-time updates on security line statuses on its website. Travelers are still advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours prior to international departures.
• Parking reservations: Parking spots can be pre-booked online. Travelers can enter their travel dates to secure a parking space at the airport or with nearby facilities.
• Traffic adjustments: During peak periods, the inner three lanes of the departure level roadway will be open for all vehicles. Shuttle buses will operate from the lower arrivals area, and passengers can be collected from either the upper or lower levels.
