Icy rain in the northern section of New Jersey might result in “slippery and perilous” sidewalks, roads, and bridges from Friday evening into Saturday morning, according to the most recent weather forecast.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has released a winter weather alert from 7 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday for Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties.

The region is anticipated to experience total ice accumulation of up to one-tenth of an inch, as per the weather service.

Freezing rain happens when falling snow transforms into raindrops and freezes immediately upon contact with cold surfaces such as the ground, tree branches, or wires.

“Traveling at night may become slippery and dangerous due to this, particularly on bridges, overpasses, untreated highways, and untreated sidewalks,” the weather service mentioned Friday morning.

Motorists are recommended to exercise utmost caution and allocate extra time for travel on Saturday morning.

In other parts of the state, rain is predicted to commence and persist as regular rain into Saturday.

The area will remain dry throughout the day on Friday, although cloud cover will increase progressively during the day, according to the weather service. Friday’s temperatures will hover in the mid-30s, slightly warmer than Thursday.

As the evening approaches, temperatures will range from the upper 20s to mid-30s. The positive news is that temperatures will gradually rise starting Saturday morning, causing any residual freezing rain to transition to plain rain by mid-Saturday morning, forecasters indicate.

Most regions should be above freezing by Saturday morning’s sunrise, excluding parts of Warren and Sussex counties.

The warming trend is expected to persist, with Saturday’s highs ranging from the lower 40s to the upper 50s. By Sunday, all areas are projected to reach the 50s, with some regions even reaching the lower to mid-60s.
