BLOOMINGDALE — Pupils of the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School have been offered the chance to participate in the Drug Free Clubs of America initiative as a method to inspire a healthy living approach. Additionally, school authorities are seeking assistance from the local community to support this undertaking.
Principal Andy Long elaborated on how the initiative not only aids students in making constructive choices but also provides long-term benefits through various means.
“Drug Free Clubs of America focuses on encouraging students to make positive and healthy decisions,” Long affirmed. “It empowers students to choose a healthy lifestyle. This will function as a student organization wherein they will be issued identification. There will be an internal incentive and reward structure, and we are also seeking community support. We hope to create opportunities for incentives, as we believe that rewarding positive actions will inspire students to commit to a drug-free lifestyle.”
Officials shared that the club was founded by firefighters in 2005. Their initiative was a reaction to the many tragedies they had experienced due to drug abuse in their neighborhoods.
Overdoses and acts of violence were significant factors that led to the establishment of this national club. Currently, the organization claims around 6,000 teenage members spread across more than 50 chapters in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Clubs can be found within educational institutions and colleges. The mission of the initiative is to shield the nation’s youth from the devastating effects of drug misuse by employing effective strategies that nurture promising futures.
The vision of the club declares: “A hopeful generation of healthy, secure teenagers who trust that they can rely on the DFCA’s methods to protect and promote their drug-free lifestyles.” Its fundamental values include integrity, innovation, optimism, camaraderie, and resilience. Officials will pursue partnerships with businesses and other organizations for incentives, such as discounts and various rewards for students who possess a club membership card.
“We plan to reach out to local businesses to determine if they would be willing to provide incentives, and we will seek support for these students,” Long stated. “Incentives at the school may vary from pizza parties to privileged parking spots in the student parking area. We aim to motivate students to uphold a healthy lifestyle while fostering a stronger, healthier community.”
To uphold this commitment, students will be required to undergo drug testing twice a year with their parents’ approval. Long mentioned that memberships are entirely voluntary.
“Numerous career-technical schools are members of the Drug Free Clubs of America,” he noted. “Students who present their ID to potential employers might advance higher on the job hiring list.”
Juniors will commence sign-ups at the start of the academic year, Long stated, adding that the initiative is set to launch in the following school year.
