Spotlight on Talent: Celebrating the British Photography Awards with NEN in North Edinburgh

A member of the NHS Lothian e-Health team is celebrating having won two accolades in a renowned photography contest.

Thomas Lamont, Microsoft 365 Programme Manager, has clinched the People’s Choice Award in the Drone Category at the British Photography Awards and has been recognized as the Scottish Aerial Photographer of the Year 2024/2025 at the Scotland Prestige Awards.

Having been a committed member of the eHealth team since 2007, Thomas dedicates his daytime hours to contributing to the National Programme for the deployment of Office 365. By night, he becomes “The Kilted Photographer,” capturing breathtaking images of local landmarks, primarily using his drone, while proudly donning his kilt.

The award-winning image features the National Wallace Monument in Stirling, located close to Thomas’s residence, at sunset, showcasing the monument illuminated in orange to raise awareness of Battens Disease.

Thomas received his award at the distinguished ceremony hosted at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. In accordance with the awards’ charitable objective, he directed his donation towards the NHS Lothian Charity.

Thomas stated: “It’s difficult to express my feelings about winning the award, but I would say shock, disbelief, and joy all at the same time. The quality of the other submissions was remarkable! To be acknowledged in one of Britain’s prestigious photography awards for what I consider my primary instrument for capturing images (drone) is astonishing!

“I’ve always been deeply passionate about photography, but it genuinely flourished through a small camera club that we had within eHealth/Digital. Photography has become not only a creative outlet but also a crucial part of supporting my mental health and alleviating anxiety.

“With time, I’ve broadened my expertise, invested in new gear, and explored the realms of drone and 360-degree photography.

“I also received my Operational Authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority, which permits me to operate larger, more sophisticated drones in intricate and demanding environments, such as urban areas.”
