Cameron McDonald, the Mayor of Kiama Council, has advocated for the safe enjoyment of our beaches and waterways following a tragic incident at South Bombo Beach yesterday evening. This marks the second drowning incident at Kiama’s beaches during this holiday period.
The Council and the Mayor extend their heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the individual who passed away.
“We encourage all visitors and residents to adhere to safety protocols when they are in or near the water. Utilize our lifeguarded beaches, swim between the flags, and always heed instructions from our Lifeguards and volunteer Lifesavers,” stated Cr McDonald.
“Our Lifeguards are trained professionals. Take their guidance and directions earnestly and comply with their requests. Pay attention to the posted signs. Be aware of your personal skills and limitations. Avoid taking unnecessary risks.”
“It is a devastating loss when a life is taken, and the impact on our staff and others who assist is immense. In this case, regrettably, the individual entered the water after the flags had been taken down for the day and became ensnared in a powerful rip current. Council Lifeguards provided CPR, and emergency services were also present at the scene, but the individual was unresponsive. We are grateful to all who offered their assistance.”
“We aspire for everyone to safely enjoy our beautiful beaches and waterways, but it is a reality that many of them possess strong rips and currents.”
“It is crucial for beachgoers and water users to read the posted signs and comply with instructions and safety advice. In addition to swimming and surfing safety, wear a life jacket if you are using watercraft and remain within designated zones. Avoid entering the water after consuming alcohol and do not go in alone. Take safety measures and use life jackets on our rock platforms, where sudden waves can happen. Each of these precautions could help avert another tragedy,” Mayor McDonald remarked.
