Photography is an imaginative endeavor. Creativity involves a sequence of actions. Grasping that sequence enhances your creativity, which in turn improves your skills as a photographer.

This concept is relevant regardless of your experience level, whether you are a total novice, an experienced professional, or anywhere in between.

It’s impossible to fully delve into the creative journey within a single article. You could easily fill an entire book with this topic. However, I can provide you with two straightforward, actionable suggestions to energize your creative journey in 2025.

Concept #1: The creative journey unfolds through action

A certain degree of contemplation is always part of the creative process, but nothing progresses until you initiate movement. It’s akin to being a writer – a seasoned writer understands that the only method to complete work is to sit down and type.

The same principle holds true for photography. You need to create opportunities.

I rediscovered this notion earlier this year with my The End of Summer initiative. I began without a clear concept aside from visiting some local gardens and capturing macro shots of flowers. A month into the process, the concept for the project emerged. However, if I had not taken that initial step, it would have never materialized.

By the way, all the images featured in this article are from this initiative.

I am now intending to expand this idea by exploring gardens that are more distant and even overseas. I have no expectations of what might transpire or the projects I may undertake. Yet, I am confident that if I take the plunge, something will inevitably occur.

Passive versus active inspiration

Understanding the distinction between passive and active inspiration is crucial.

Passive inspiration involves perusing articles about photography and examining the works of other photographers without taking any actions. You assimilate concepts, but fail to implement them.

It’s important to clarify – learning about photography, drawing inspiration from fellow photographers’ creations, and recognizing your influences are all vital components of the creative process. This is the stage of contemplation or reflection. It’s where you take in influences and concepts and consider them in your mind.

However, at a certain point, action is necessary. Active inspiration is when you take the knowledge or insights you’ve gathered and integrate them into your own photographic endeavors.

Active inspiration is about bringing new ideas to life. This goes beyond taking photographs; it encompasses the tangible outcomes, such as new website galleries, prints, zines, and photo albums.

The wonderful aspect of active inspiration is that it fosters sustained passion and excitement. The processes of creation, experimentation, making errors, and producing propel you forward. They nurture your growth as a photographer and an imaginative individual.

Embracing your creativity

Let’s delve deeper into the notion of being creative. While this article focuses on photography, many of you may have additional creative pursuits.

An essential part of being a creative individual is having a fascination with various creative endeavors, including arts, crafts, and literature, along with photography.

Though most of us face time constraints, any effort you make to nurture your overall creativity will ultimately enhance your photography over time.

The benefits of mastering the creative process

Individuals who excel in the creative process are highly productive creators. They consistently produce outstanding work. They cultivate the habit of taking action, continuously engaging in new creations.

This can be observed in the literary realm, where bestselling authors churn out novel after novel. Stephen King exemplifies this perfectly.

Another great example is one of my preferred fiction writers, Jacqueline Winspear. Her Maisie Dobbs series showcases this talent, crafted continuously…

over a span of twenty years, features eighteen exceptional novels. The majority of authors would be delighted to produce a single book that matches the quality of hers throughout their careers. She has crafted eighteen. That is the productivity of someone who comprehends the creative journey.

The same holds true in the realm of photography, in both commercial and artistic domains. Artists such as Annie Liebovitz, Steve McCurry, and Michael Kenna have attained the pinnacle of achievement and abundant output over numerous decades. You might be able to think of many additional instances, based on whom you admire.

As you enhance your mastery of the creative process, you can replicate this for yourself, albeit on a smaller scale. You will consistently have ongoing projects, innovative concepts, fresh prints, zines, and photo books to showcase.

Idea #2: The creative process incorporates planning

Part of bringing any idea to fruition is meticulous planning. This is particularly relevant in today’s digital age, where we are inundated with devices aimed at diverting our focus and capturing our interest (yes, I am referring to smartphones and tablets).

For instance, how much of your day is dedicated to social media or browsing or consuming the news?

Let’s assume it’s an hour. That translates to seven hours a week, thirty-one in a month, and three hundred sixty-five over a year.

What if it’s two or three hours daily? I’ll leave the math to you.

A multitude of research indicates that both social media and news consumption adversely affects mental well-being. These activities are also passive. You aren’t learning, creating, or engaging while partaking in them.

Now consider this: what if you redirected that hour spent on news and social media into something beneficial? It could be anything—from enjoying a captivating novel to diving deeper into photography or any creative pursuit. Engaging in meaningful dialogues with cherished friends and family. Adventuring in nature. Staying active through exercise or sports.

Allocate time

You must dedicate time to photography, even if it’s merely a few hours monthly. You need to grant yourself the authority to take initiative.

If you find yourself short on time, reflect on the amount of time you invest in passive activities such as news consumption and social media. Then, ask yourself how your life would change if that time was spent on active and positive endeavors.

Organize your year

This is a roundabout way of prompting you to contemplate how you plan to allocate the upcoming year in relation to your photography. As I pen this, we are nearing the conclusion of 2024. A new year presents an excellent opportunity to establish goals for the next twelve months. What do you aspire to accomplish?

You must deliberate on this ahead of time to facilitate planning.

For instance, I intend to persist with my concept of capturing images of flowers and gardens in the spring. It would be wise to consider which gardens I wish to explore so that I can organize my visits.

I’m also strategizing an overseas journey. I need to sort out the specifics now; otherwise, the window of opportunity will slip away, and it won’t occur.

The same notion applies to you. Contemplate what you hope to accomplish with your photography in this coming year.

  • What skills do you wish to acquire?
  • What themes and projects do you want to investigate?
  • What destinations are on your wish list?
  • What types of photographs do you aspire to create?
  • What would you like to showcase from your efforts by year’s end? Hopefully, a few prints on your wall, a couple of zines, and some new photo exhibitions at the very least.

You might not have the answers to these inquiries just yet. However, you should at least begin reflecting on them.

Enhance your creative process
