Celebrating a Legacy: Photographer Phillips Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

The Croydon photography collective, Lenses of Croydon, celebrated Ronald “Charlie” Phillips during its festive gathering.

Lee Townsend, the originator of Lenses of Croydon, bestowed upon Phillips a Lifetime Membership Award, acknowledging his exceptional contributions to photography and steadfast support for the grassroots group, which has been nurturing aspiring photographers since 2012.

Phillips, a photographer originally from Jamaica, has made a lasting influence in the field of photography.

Renowned for capturing the vibrant and moving narratives of Notting Hill during the period of West Indian migration in the 1960s and 1970s, his camera has also documented famous film icons, student protests, and the deeply moving traditions of London’s Afro-Caribbean community.

With exhibitions at Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum of London, “Charlie’s creativity knows no bounds,” Townsend remarked. His works have featured in renowned publications like Stern, Harper’s Bazaar, Life and Vogue.

In 2022, Phillips’ impact was recognized with an OBE award for his services to photography and the arts.

“We are incredibly thankful for Charlie’s influence not just in the art world but also within the flourishing community of creatives supported by Lenses of Croydon,” Townsend commented.

“His enthusiasm continues to motivate countless generations of photographers to express their narratives through the lens.
