A photographer who typically directs her focus toward dogs commenced a project highlighting rescue cats and their narratives.

Traer Scott informs PetaPixel that rescue cats present an overlooked issue, as 3.2 million enter animal shelters annually, with nearly half facing euthanasia.

“There are insufficient homes available, thus education on spaying/neutering is essential,” Scott remarks. “In contrast to dogs, I believe there remains a prevalent belief that cats are interchangeable and replaceable, which needs to be changed.”

Scott’s endeavor, now published as a book titled Rescue Cats, consisted of her following a selection of rescue cats primarily inside people’s residences with minimal gear: simply a DSLR camera, a flash, and occasionally a portable backdrop.

“While some cats adapt well to travel, most do not, and I aimed to photograph them when they felt most at ease,” Scott clarifies.

“Dogs can usually be persuaded with treats, but cats are considerably more challenging to win over. One of my three cat experts joined me at every session, assisting in managing and coaxing the subjects. Together we identified the optimal locations for shooting, often striking a balance between the area where the cat felt most comfortable and what appeared most visually appealing.”

Scott completed the project within eight months throughout New England. A total of 22 cats are showcased in the publication, alongside a litter of kittens that “the audience observes growing up.” She mentions that she “gained extensive knowledge about the various cats’ pasts, many of which had genuinely heartrending tales.”

“What they all share is indeed the rescue element,” Scott explains.

“One or more individuals cared enough to advocate for them, to step in, to foster, to adopt, and ultimately save a life. I can’t say I have a singular favorite, but several that profoundly resonated with me were Forrest, Juliette, and Linus.”
