Michael Sage Steps into the Spotlight: Leading the University of the Sunshine Coast for the Year Ahead

On the 24th of December, Swimming Australia declared that Michael Sage would assume the role of head coach at the University of the Sunshine Coast for the forthcoming 12 months. This decision follows the dismissal of previous head coach Michael Palfrey, who was relieved of his duties after making remarks during the Paris Olympics favoring a Korean swimmer over an Australian.

Sage had been serving as the assistant coach under Palfrey and has likely continued in that role since Palfrey’s termination in September.

The University of the Sunshine Coast performance hub is recognized as one of eight Olympic swimming centers in the nation. Swimming Australia established these hubs to assist elite athletes in training alongside peers at their skill level across the country, enhancing Australia’s competitiveness against “high-population” nations such as China and the United States. Additionally, they have one Paralympic hub, also located at Sunshine Coast, which is directed by Harley Connolly.

The Sunshine Coast Olympic hub is home to three competitors scheduled to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics: Abbey Connor, Zac Incerti, and Alexandria Perkins. Perkins recently delivered an outstanding performance at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, securing three medals—two bronze and one silver.

Perkins also shattered two Oceanian records in the 50 and 100 butterfly events.
