Rattlers Conclude Grueling Non-Conference Journey at Tarleton State This Sunday!

STEPHENVILLE, Texas –– On Sunday evening, Florida A&M (3-7) concludes its demanding non-conference schedule with a trip to Stephenville, Texas, where they will take on Tarleton State (4-10) at 5 p.m. Eastern.

The Rattlers, having faced the most formidable non-conference schedule in the nation, aim to gain momentum before the onset of SWAC competition. FAMU has encountered a tough series of games, featuring matches against TCU, SMU, Maryland, Florida, Clemson, Utah, and BYU. Despite the challenging schedule, the Rattlers have demonstrated potential, notably with their three-point shooting (9.9 threes per game, 38th nationally) and bench scoring (39.0 points per game, 6th nationally).

Sterling Young stands out as FAMU’s leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points per game, along with a free throw conversion rate of 79.5%. Milton Matthews has emerged as a consistent threat from long range, sinking 24 three-pointers throughout the season. They have also benefitted from solid inside performances from Shaqir O’Neal, contributing 9.6 points on 52.1% shooting.

Entering the matchup on a high note, Tarleton State recently triumphed over Howard Payne with a score of 100-83. The Texans are spearheaded by Bubu Benjamin, who averages 17.1 points per game, shooting 51.9% from the field and 45.6% from three-point territory.

For FAMU, crucial factors will include maintaining possession (averaging 14.6 turnovers per game) and controlling the rebounding efforts, where they have struggled with a -6.3 rebound deficit. The Rattlers plan to accelerate the pace and leverage their three-point shooting strength against a Tarleton State squad that permits opponents to connect on 36.5% of their three-point attempts.

This contest signifies the inaugural meeting between these two teams. After Sunday’s game, FAMU will shift its focus to SWAC action as they return home to host Bethune-Cookman on January 4, 2025.
