Reviving Nostalgia: PlayStation Co-CEO Explores Reimagining Beloved Classics

When Astro Bot launched in September, numerous players cherished the homage to Sony’s history and PlayStation classics embedded throughout the game. From acknowledgments of more recent franchises such as Horizon and Uncharted to older titles like Ape Escape, the game heavily catered to nostalgia. This has sparked inquiries about whether PlayStation might revisit its catalog of classic franchises for new titles in the future.

In a recent conversation with Famitsu, PlayStation Co-CEO Herman Hulst was questioned about former PlayStation series and the potential for their return. As per Hulst, it’s certainly not an impossibility for the company.

“The numerous IP assets we possess are crucial resources for PlayStation, and as part of our initiative to enhance our portfolio, we are persistently exploring opportunities to utilize past IPs alongside fostering new franchises,” Hulst stated via translation.

Hulst mentioned that the organization’s objective is to launch games produced by the finest developers, irrespective of whether they belong to PlayStation Studios. He acknowledged external studios for their “countless successes thus far”.

The concept of resurrecting classic franchises has gained momentum within the gaming sector over the years. Presently, fellow Japanese firm Sega is in the midst of a significant revival of classic titles such as Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, and more.

Whether PlayStation opts to resurrect classic games in the future clearly remains uncertain. Nevertheless, it must be reassuring for devoted fans of the studio to recognize that the door isn’t entirely shut if a suitable opportunity arises.
