Almost 19,000 video game titles launched on Steam this calendar year—18,945 as of the latest update, meaning if approximately 50 more titles are withdrawn before January 1, 2025, my headline would be misleading, but whatever, I’m going with it. Where was I?
Oh, right, what on earth? That is an astonishing number of game launches. Per the ever-reliable statistic tracker SteamDB, that is our figure for the year, which is significant. Specifically, a total of 5,600 more than in 2023, which itself was a few thousand more than in 2022. This indicates that 2024 represents what seems to be the largest single-year increase in game releases ever recorded on Steam, with no indication that the influx is subsiding. More games are being launched than ever, at a faster pace.
Nevertheless, amidst the overwhelming surge of games, only a small fraction met the popularity threshold established by Valve for community profile features to be activated—that’s when they can have profile customizations such as trading cards, badges, and emoticons, and contribute to a user’s Game Collector and Achievement Collector totals.
Only 3,964 games reached that threshold compared to 3,874 in 2023 and 3,491 in 2021—with the figures decreasing by a few hundred in preceding years. Therefore, there are more games than ever, but only a few more are garnering attention and engagement from the community.
SteamDB also provides their curated list of the highest-rated games of 2024, where it’s clear that players have a strong affinity for Balatro, but that’s likely something you were already aware of, right? Following that are MiSide, WEBFISHING, The WereCleaner, Sheepy, Satisfactory, Black Myth: Wukong, TCG Card Shop Simulator, Fields of Mistria, and 20 Small Mazes.
The key takeaway from that list is that if you aspire for recognition, you should invest considerable time and effort into crafting a quality game and offer it for free.
