A man has lost his life while swimming at Carlton Beach located in southern Tasmania.
According to Tasmania Police, the 38-year-old individual endeavored to save four children who were struggling in powerful currents close to the Carlton River’s entrance around 1pm.
Inspector Darren Latham stated that Surf Life Saving members responded promptly and successfully rescued the four young ones, who did not need medical assistance.
“From what I gather, the man stayed out there while they returned for him,” he mentioned.
“I have been informed that he was indeed conscious when he was placed in the boat, but sadly, he later lost consciousness and CPR was initiated from that moment on.”
The man succumbed at the location.
Four ambulances, an air ambulance, and law enforcement also arrived at the location.
The beach is supervised by Surf Life Saving personnel, however, the area near the river’s mouth falls outside the marked red and yellow flags.
Cautionary signs are also present near the river’s mouth.
Inspector Latham expressed that it was a heartbreaking event for everyone involved.
“Like all beaches, there are hazardous areas, and we strongly encourage people to remain within the flags,” he remarked.
“However, since the investigation is still in its early stages, we must ascertain the location of the children at the time and how they ended up in peril.
“It is clear they encountered difficulties, which then prompted this man to attempt a rescue.”
A report will be compiled for the coroner.
