Tragic Turn: Russian LGBTQ Travel Advocate Dies Mysteriously in Custody

A Russian citizen apprehended and charged with operating a travel agency catering to LGBTQ clients was discovered deceased while in custody in Moscow, as reported by the rights organization OVD-Info on Sunday, amidst a crackdown on LGBTQ rights in the country.

As per OVD-Info, which monitors political detentions, Andrei Kotov — the head of the “Men Travel” agency — was confronted with allegations of “organizing extremist activities and participating in them.”

OVD-Info indicated that an investigator informed Kotov’s attorney that her client had taken his own life early Sunday while in pretrial holding and was found lifeless in his cell.

Before Kotov’s demise, independent media outlet Mediazona had reported earlier this month that Kotov had denied the accusations and stated in court that law enforcement personnel had beaten him and applied electric shocks during his arrest, even though he did not put up any resistance.

Just over a year prior, Russia’s Supreme Court effectively banned any LGBTQ activism with a ruling that categorized “the international LGBT movement” as extremist. This action exposed anyone within the community or associated with it to potential criminal charges and incarceration, creating a pervasive atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

The LGBTQ community in Russia has faced legal and societal pressure for more than a decade, particularly since the Kremlin dispatched troops to Ukraine in 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin contends that the conflict serves as a proxy struggle against the West, which he claims seeks to undermine Russia and its “traditional family values” by advocating for LGBTQ rights.
