Tragic Turn: Russian LGBTQ+ Travel Agency Founder Dies in Custody After Arrest

A man from Russia, detained for allegedly operating a travel service catering to homosexual clients, was reported dead while in custody in Moscow, according to rights organization OVD-Info on Sunday, amidst a crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights occurring in Russia.

As per OVD-Info, which monitors political detentions, Andrei Kotov — the head of the “Men Travel” agency — was confronted with accusations of “organizing extremist actions and being involved in them.”

OVD-Info stated that an investigator relayed to Kotov’s attorney that her client had taken his own life early Sunday while in pretrial detention and was discovered deceased in his cell.

Before Kotov’s passing, independent media organization Mediazona had reported earlier this month that Kotov denied the allegations and claimed in court that law enforcement had assaulted him and applied electric shocks during his arrest, despite his lack of resistance.

Slightly over a year ago, Russia’s Supreme Court effectively prohibited any LGBTQ+ activism through a decision that classified “the international LGBT movement” as extremist. This decision placed anyone within the community or affiliated with it at risk of criminal charges and imprisonment, creating an environment of dread and oppression.

For over a decade, the LGBTQ+ community in Russia has faced legal and societal pressures, but this has intensified since the Kremlin dispatched troops to Ukraine in 2022. Russian president Vladimir Putin has claimed that the conflict represents a proxy war against the West, which he asserts seeks to undermine Russia and its “traditional family values” by advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.
