The Oklahoma high school boys’ and girls’ swimming season is in full progression, having commenced over a month ago and will carry on until mid-February.

Class 5A Carl Albert and Class 6A Jenks are the reigning boys’ state champions, whereas Class 5A Shawnee and Class 6A Bartlesville aim to uphold their titles for the girls. The season has begun with an already captivating start as these programs have started to encounter formidable challenges as they aspire for a repeat.

As the season develops, here are several storylines from the Oklahoma City area to track during the 2024-25 season:

Key OKC-area boys swimming narratives for the 2024-25 season

Carl Albert aims to defend the Class 5A title. After years of evident promise and development, Carl Albert finally overcame obstacles last season to capture its first-ever 5A state title. The victory was largely supported by stars Ben Sutterfield and Jackson Lorenz, both of whom have graduated. Carl Albert will start 2025 with significant returnees like Andrew Campbell, Reece Rushing, and Ridge Thornton, who have guided the team to multiple top-five finishes this season thus far.

Can Edmond North reclaim prominence in 2025? Following their state title win in 2023, the program experienced a calmer season last year. The team lost several vital contributors, including Collin Ho, but retains a wealth of talent poised to make a significant impact this season. Edmond North recently triumphed at the Edmond Sprinteenth Meet by a remarkable margin of 127 points, led by their impressive trio of Riley Conway, Jack Starrett, and Garrett Levendofsky.

Key OKC-area girls swimming narratives for the 2024-25 season

Can Shawnee achieve a four-peat? The Wolves have secured the previous three state titles and exhibit no indications of decelerating as they enter 2025. Stars like Ashley McDonald and Gracyn Simpson have begun their senior year on a strong note. The team compiled 399 points to clinch victory at a home meet against Casady, Byng Ada, and Heritage Hall last week.

Edmond North, rich in talent, persists in contention. Edmond North has been competitive over the last few years, recently celebrating a state title win in 2022. Similar to the boys, the girls’ team is stacked with talent, featuring athletes like Kelsey Healy and Cal commit Laney Jones, who recently won the 50 freestyle and secured second in the 100 individual medley at the Edmond Sprinteeth. The team recently achieved first place with 389 points at the Edmond Invitational.

Edmond Memorial aiming for its first state title in 18 years. Edmond Memorial has launched into the 2024-25 season with a strong start. Guided by swimmers Ryan Kent, Saylor Stoner, and Carter Wilson, the team has recently celebrated first-place finishes at the Edmond Sprinteenth meet (694.5 points) and secured second place at the Edmond Invitational meet (388 points).
