Math Magic: How Montverde Academy Sixth Graders Turned Numbers into Fun and Creativity!

Mrs. Bledman’s sixth-grade students recently participated in an enjoyable and creative math project titled “My Favorite Number.” The aim was to introduce students to mathematics in a manner that demonstrates its fun and creative aspects. Students investigated prime numbers, composite numbers, factors, multiples, and various techniques for performing prime factorization, including the tree model and ladder technique.

Each participant selected their preferred method and number to create a unique project called “My Favorite Number.” They designed vibrant posters that displayed not just their mathematical insights but also their individual connections to the number they chose.

One pupil picked the number 30, as they enjoy doing 30 different activities each month. They incorporated this into mathematical facts, including 30 being an even and composite number.

Another student opted for the prime number 13 since it is Taylor Swift’s lucky number, explaining their preference for the ladder method of factorization.

“I encourage my students to engage in creative tasks to combat the anxiety that some may have towards mathematics,” expressed Mrs. Bledman. “This exercise motivated students to appreciate the enjoyable aspects of math while making them more comfortable with numbers and a range of mathematical theories.”
