Fresh lighting panels have been installed in a hospital maternity unit to enhance the ambiance for both staff and patients.
These panels, positioned in the Bardney and Nettleham wards at Lincoln County Hospital, emit light and transition through various settings that align with the time of day.
One panel, depicting a scenic lake and mountains, is installed in a ward without any natural daylight.
The installation of these new panels has been sponsored by United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity (ULHC).
This initiative comes in response to reports of staff facing challenges due to inadequate natural light during their shifts, with some midwives reporting symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), according to healthcare professionals.
Bardney Ward caters to women in labor while Nettleham Ward serves as the antenatal and postnatal unit for mothers and their newborns.
Claudia Coggan, a midwife at Nettleham Ward, mentioned that natural light had difficulty reaching the midwives’ station, where the computers were located.
Nonetheless, she remarked that since the installation, the distribution of light has significantly improved.
“The highlight is that we can modify the light intensity to suit our requirements,” she stated.
Hospital charity manager Ben Petts remarked: “They bring a bit of nature indoors and have greatly enhanced the appearance and atmosphere of the wards.”
ULHC assists staff in providing care to patients, their families, and caregivers in the county’s healthcare facilities.
The funds raised by the charity facilitate additional amenities, such as a sensory room at Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital and teddy bears for neonatal units.
