In 2023, it was reported that PS5 consoles positioned vertically were susceptible to damage due to a design imperfection that supposedly caused liquid metal (utilized for cooling) to overflow. Such reports sparked considerable debate, with numerous individuals questioning their validity. Now, a PS5 Pro disassembly video indicates that Sony might have discreetly resolved the issue, if it indeed existed.

PS5 Pro design may resolve vertical placement issues

As highlighted by the technology YouTube channel How-FixIT, the PS5 Pro’s heat sink block incorporates surface “ridges” that engage with the liquid metal, assisting in its uniform distribution over the APU chip. How-FixIT suggests that this reduces the likelihood of the liquid metal spilling over unevenly and collecting elsewhere, leading to potential overheating of the console.

The video also provides a comparison with the standard PS5’s heat sink block, which remains completely flat.

The earlier reports emerged in early 2023, preceding the release of the PS5 Slim. Nonetheless, both the original PS5 and PS5 Slim were equipped with heat sink blocks that could potentially precipitate the spill when situated vertically.

While those claims are still contested, we struggle to identify any alternative rationale for the implementation of the ridges beyond what How-FixIT has proposed.
